I Was Shocked When I Opened My Inbox
In November, my friend Tony emailed me an article about suicide rates among Americans. I'm emailed articles like this taken from many different news outlets because I like to stay up-to-date and adapt my teachings so they stay practical, and relevant as our society changes.
Well, I did not expect to read what I was about to read that morning.
This research claimed that since 1999 the suicide rate among middle-aged women had dramatically jumped 31%.
I quickly went to other articles to verify this unprecedented jump in suicide rates of middle-aged women.
Here are a few of the newspaper articles I read:
"U.S. suicide rates appear to be on the rise, driven mostly by middle-aged white women, researchers reported on Tuesday."
"For women 45 to 54, the rate leapt 31 percent."
"That is certainly a break from trends of the past," said Ann Haas, the research director of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. By contrast, the suicide rate for 15-to-19-year-olds increased less than 2 percent during that five-year period — and decreased among people 65 and older."
"While it would be straightforward to attribute the results to a rise in so-called mid-life crises, recent studies find that middle age is mostly a time of relative security and emotional well-being," said Susan P. Baker of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health."
There are three major points that hit home for me:
- Suicide rates among women aged 45-54 years old leapt 31%
- Suicide rates among others rose only slightly, or even decreased
- Middle age is mostly a time of security and emotional well-being
